Villa Kelusa was exactly what we were looking for. It’s tucked away, surrounded by lush forests and rice patties as far as the eye can see. Wayan and the rest of the staff were very welcoming and bent over backwards to ensure we were well looked after — they found out my little brother likes dried mango and so went and found a dehydrator so he had some fresh with breakfast every morning. We look Wayan up on his offer to explore the neighborhood by bike and it was really humbling to see all these people so hard at work, with smiles plastered on their faces the whole while (Wayan called it the “village smile”). The place is 4 bedrooms, however one of the rooms is rather small, especially compared to the extravagant open-plan one with a bath tub.. so you might have to fight over that. Overall it was a wonderful stay and I’d recommend it to anyone I know.

About Villa Kelusa
A beautiful four-bedroom villa set on a sloping tropical hill, offering captivating views of the surrounding rice fields and jungle ravine just outside Ubud, Bali. Located in the village of Kelusa just north of central Ubud in Bali, Indonesia. The villa offers a peaceful location surrounded by rice fields, rainforest, and Balinese village life. At jungles’s edge, atop a vast amphitheater of rice paddies cascading down into the deep gorge of the holy Pakuseba canyon, Villa Kelusa commands a panoramic view of a distant ridge of nine ancient volcanoes.
Villa Kelusa is made up of two standalone villas located side by side: Pondok Sapi and Pondok Surya which can be rented separately or together. Each villa has two bedrooms and their own private swimming pools. Villa Kelusa offers a blissfully peaceful setting surrounded by the “real” Bali, with the restaurants, spas, temples and art galleries of central Ubud waiting about 20 minutes away and the iconic Tegalalang Rice Terrace and Bali Pulina Coffee plantation both within a 15 minutes drive from the villa
Pondok Sapi consists of three separate buildings crowned by thatched roofs. One building is lined by windows throughout and houses two bedrooms, one located on each floor and both adjoined by luxurious ensuite bathrooms. Pondok Sapi also has a large open-air living pavilion with comfortable seating areas furnished with couches, traditional chairs, swings, and a coffee table. Next to the living room is an air-conditioned TV room which can also be set up as an extra bedroom if needed. Pondok Sapi also has a gourmet kitchen and a private entertainment cabana with a pool and lounge.
The bedrooms both have large king-sized beds with crisp white linen, directly facing the glass windows with panoramic views of the rainforest. Each room has a luxurious bathtub, with the upstairs master suite’s bathtub located inside the bedroom right beside the window.
Pondok Surya, or Sunset House, is designed to offer lovely panoramic views of rice paddies, jungle, and mountains. The ground floor houses an open-sided lounge which is split in two by the villa’s stunning infinity pool. The pool includes an in-built table that allows you to dine or sip drinks while submerged in the water. This lounge room also includes the villa’s TV area and open-plan kitchen.
Pondok Surya has two bedrooms. The guest bedroom is located on the ground floor and houses two single beds which can also be set up as a king-sized bed if needed. The room has an open-air bathroom with a shower – this bathroom can also be accessed from the living room but both doors can be locked from inside and out. The master bedroom is located upstairs and houses a king-sized bed and an enclosed ensuite bathroom with a stunning wooden bathtub.

Great resort – high quality materials reminded me of an Aman. They keep the grounds immaculate. The villas overlook a lush valley. The staff have been here for years and will look you after very well. Plus for animal lovers – there is a dog and cat on the grounds!
We had a Balinese dinner here one night and the food from the cook (who lives in the village nearby) was excellent.
Ubud is about a 10 minute drive away. So shopping and food is nearby. We didn’t want to leave the villa while we were there though!Date of stay: November 2019
It was my 60th Birthday and I had searched for somewhere to take my 4 grown children for a relaxing break from the business of life. From our first contact, Villa Kelusa was reassuring and attentive to all our booking needs. On our arrival we were met by incredibly kind and attentive staff, as we walked through the gates we knew we had found a wonderful gem hidden amongst the rice fields. We had found our slice of paradise!! Even better than what the photos described.
The surprise of having such great staff on-site was fantastic. I was wondering prior to our arrival as to how staffing at the Villa was going to work- everything was above what I could have asked for. We were so impressed with all the staff that by the end of our visit we felt like were saying goodbye to family. Every member of staff from the cooks to the gardeners went above and beyond their call of duty. They were attentive to not only our needs but helped us plan what we should do each day. Wayun, the concierge, is absolutely brilliant and worth his weight in Gold! We so look forward to getting back here in the near future! Thankyou Villa Kelusa – we loved our stay!Date of stay: October 2019
